Compare the first image with this scan,
from the 1886 Beers Atlas of the City of Newton (Section T). The 11 intervening
years saw significant infrastructure development, as Newton Centre transitioned
from its earlier, more agricultural character. Note, for example, the demise
of the large chestnut tree which formerly occupied the top of the hill on the Claflin
parcel, where Gibbs Street now turns west. Neither map shows Commonwealth Avenue, which
was not built until the 1890s.
