Beers 1875 map

This image is part of a larger scan of the 1875 Beers Atlas of Middlesex County, MA pages 93 and 94. The original map is bounded on the west by the Charles River and on the east by the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, as is the City.
Beers Newton map 1886

Compare the first image with this scan, from the 1886 Beers Atlas of the City of Newton (Section T). The 11 intervening years saw significant infrastructure development, as Newton Centre transitioned from its earlier, more agricultural character. Note, for example, the demise of the large chestnut tree which formerly occupied the top of the hill on the Claflin parcel, where Gibbs Street now turns west. Neither map shows Commonwealth Avenue, which was not built until the 1890s.
